GP7 Cinema Begins Production on the Second Season of “Contracapa,” Paraná’s First Major Independent Series

The production company GP7 Cinema has officially begun preparations for the second season of CONTRACAPA, a fiction series that has established itself as the first major independent series produced in the state of Paraná.

Filming is scheduled to take place between September and October 2026, once again bringing together hundreds of professionals from the technical, artistic, and creative fields, with casting calls and crew hiring now underway. Created by Rafael Waltrick, with Guto Pasko serving as executive producer, and produced by Andréia Kaláboa and Guto Pasko, CONTRACAPA takes a behind-the-scenes look at how news is crafted through the lens of investigative journalism.

Set in the newsroom of the fictional newspaper Gazeta Brasileira, based in Curitiba, the series delves into the ethical, political, and personal conflicts faced by journalists amid a crisis of credibility and a transforming media landscape.

The first season, consisting of 13 episodes of 52 minutes each, pitted its characters against investigations that exposed political corruption schemes, putting lives at risk and triggering irreversible consequences within the newsroom.

The project also featured the international collaboration of Argentine director Franco Verdoia, who co-directed the series alongside Guto Pasko. Now, in the second season, consisting of 8 episodes of 45 minutes each, the characters will have to deal with the fallout from previous events while diving into a new investigation into irregularities in the public transportation sector—the so-called “transportation mafia”—in parallel with their coverage of a hotly contested state gubernatorial election campaign.

New season amplifies conflicts and highlights the challenges facing journalism

In the new storyline, Gazeta Brasileira faces a decisive moment: the closure of its print edition and the definitive transition to the digital environment. Amid corporate and editorial pressures, Editor-in-Chief Carla tries to maintain the publication’s relevance, while reporter Andressa leads an investigation into corruption involving city governments and public transportation companies.

At the same time, editor Rui must confront secrets from the past linked to the newspaper’s history, which is alleged to have been used as a tool to destroy reputations. Then Inácio appears, a veteran journalist willing to expose crimes that have never come to light.

With the tagline “New investigations, old problems,” the new season promises to delve deeper into the moral, political, and human conflicts that have defined the series’ success.

A series well-established in the domestic and international markets

The trajectory of CONTRACAPA demonstrates the project’s strength in the audiovisual market. The first season was funded by the Audiovisual Sector Fund (FSA), in partnership with TV Brasil / EBC, and premiered simultaneously on TV Brasil and TV Paraná Turismo (formerly Paraná Educativa) in January 2019.

Subsequently, the series aired on TV Cultura and TVE Bahia, and was licensed to AXN Brasil, part of the Sony Pictures Entertainment group. It also reached international markets, airing in Angola and Mozambique through the BOX Brazil Media Group.

On streaming platforms, the series premiered on Looke in December 2020 and, in May 2021, was also added to Amazon’s Prime Video catalog.

For the second season, the production will once again partner with EBC / TV Brasil for broadcast television and has already attracted interest in pre-licensing for pay TV from the BOX Brazil group; a license renewal with AXN is also expected.

Economic Impact and Strengthening of Paraná’s Audiovisual Sector

In addition to artistic and commercial recognition, CONTRACAPA had a direct impact on the state’s creative economy. The first season generated approximately 400 local jobs among the technical and artistic staff and the cast. Among actors alone, 107 professionals were hired, expanding access for talent from Paraná to a large-scale production.

According to Guto Pasko, the series’ continuation represents more than just the production of a new season: “CONTRACAPA has already proven its artistic and market strength. Now we want to consolidate this franchise, expand its national and international presence, and continue strengthening the entire audiovisual production chain in Paraná.”

With the production of the second season, GP7 Cinema aims not only to consolidate the franchise but also to pave the way for a future third season—a first for a fiction series produced in the state of Paraná.
